Getting Control of Clutter

Clutter is one of things that tends to just creep up on people when they least expect it. One day you live in a nice, orderly home with everything in its proper place and, next thing you know, you’re buried in clutter. For many people, the prospect of wading through all stuff is overwhelming, which only makes the problems worse.

The key to getting control of clutter and restoring order to your home is to break down this very large task into a number of very small tasks. Rather than roaming from room to room getting at smaller piles of stuff, the best strategy is to handle one room at a time. If you’re storing items from your bedroom in your guest room closet, put them there so you can work on your bedroom.

And before you get started, make sure you’ve got all the supplies you need. Home organization stores like the Container Store have a huge selection of storage containers and space saver bags. This will help you live up to the mantra of clutter control, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.”

The home office is one area that tends to get buried in loose papers and junk. Most people tend to hang on to receipts, old tax returns, and other documents a lot longer than they need to. The key to home office organization is getting to only keep things as long as you need them. There are lots of great guides that tell you exactly how long you need to keep things like tax forms and phone bills. Getting, and keeping, your papers organized by date will really help keep them under control.

The garage is another area that tends to collect junk. Depending on how long you’ve been at your house, you may even have trouble actually fitting your car in the garage. Overall, the key to garage organization is to not use it as a dumping ground. The garage is a great place to store things like boxes of Christmas decorations. Especially if you know exactly where they are and can get to them easily. The garage is not a good place to dump boxes of stuff because you’re not sure what else to do with them.

Once you’ve taken back control of your house from clutter, be sure to keep it that way. Put the things you use away when you’re done with them and throw away the things you don’t use anymore, it’s that simple.
